Recent Improvements to the Sanctuary
The partnership between the Sunshine Coast Council and Foote Sanctuary Association in managing and maintaining the Sanctuary is formalised in a Memorandum of Understanding which is reviewed annually. These annual reviews also provide an opportunity to discuss long term planning and future improvements that may be included in the Council's Capital Works Program. Below is a summary of completed and ongoing projects.
In July 2021 a project commenced to replace the steps leading from the car park to the picnic area. This was completed in December 2021. Future improvements to these steps will be a series of ramps linking different sections to provide wheelchair access. The timing of this stage is yet to be determined.
In 2020, due to escalating maintenance costs the Sunshine Coast Council demolished the old toilet block and replaced it with a new building incorporating cutting edge technology to manage the disposal of waste. This new building blends in well with the natural surroundings and is easy to clean and maintain.
In 2019, a new shelter was constructed over the electric barbecues , the existing rotunda renovated and paving replaced around both structures to create safer conditions for visitors. Recycling of some of the existing furniture and landscaping resulted in a facility that will last for many years.
